Located about 35 miles north of Clare, in Central – Northern Michigan. Houghton Lake is our state’s largest inland lake and offers some of the best outdoor activities in Michigan. The lake receives the waters of spring-fed Higgins Lake, (located near our Higgins Lake Office) through the Cut River and, in turn, is the headwaters for the Muskegon River, which flows out of the North Bay in the northwest corner of the lake. Houghton Lake is considered a warm water, relatively shallow lake, with the deepest depth of 22 feet. The lake offers fantastic boating and fishing opportunities, which include northern pike, bluegill, walleye, crappie, yellow perch and both largemouth bass and smallmouth bass.
M-55 follows the southern shore, while U.S. Highway 127 passes just to the west. M-18 and Interstate 75 pass just to the east. Here you will find four seasons of fun, fishing, fireworks, and festivals. Houghton Lake, Lake James and Lake St. Helen will delight you with their natural beauty, wildlife viewing, and spectacular sunrises and sunsets. All three lakes are a sportsman’s fishing and boating paradise. Located in the heart of Michigan you are just a short drive from a great get away.
Houghton Lake is notable for the annual winter carnival, Tip Up Town USA, which is held in January, as well as other annual activities. Neighboring lake/community, St. Helen also offers annual festivals, such as the Blue Gill Festival and ORV Jam.
Canoeing, kayaking, fishing, golfing, jet skiing, swimming, boating, and enjoying the ORV trails are just some of the summer activities locals and visitors enjoy here. As well as the extensive snowmobile trail network, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and of course ice fishing in the winter months.
