Some might say there’s not a lot in Frederic, but for anyone who considers outdoor sports (especially snowmobiling) and spirits to be all anyone really needs — and the best life has to offer, it is thee place to be. The official, year-round population floats around 1,400, but swells when it snows or spring breaks free from the grips of winter. It’s about 10 miles from Grayling, so if you need something you can’t find in town (or forgot to pack), you could drive — or take the canoe or kayak down the AuSable — to find what you need. The river flows through it, and the Huron and Manistee National Forests are close. Hunting, fishing, camping, and off-road trails for both two-tracking and snowmobiling make it a perfect place to play or live all year.
