Higgins Lake is located about 15 miles north of Houghton Lake, and is close to the village of Roscommon in Roscommon County. It is considered one of Michigan’s “Other” Great Lakes, as well as being noted as the 6th most beautiful lakes in the world! Higgins Lake delights locals and visitors year-round with its natural beauty, wildlife viewing, and spectacular sunrises and sunsets.
Higgins Lake is a large recreational and fishing lake, known for its deep, clear waters and is the 10th largest in Michigan with a shoreline of 21 miles. The Cut River connect Marl Lake to Higgins Lake giving ample opportunity to fish for perch, trout, and pike. There are two state parks, located on opposite ends of the lake. South Higgins Lake State Park, which offers a mile of beautiful shoreline, and is the second largest campground in a state park, featuring 400 modern camp sites situated in a hardwood-shaded area. North Higgins Lake State Park, is located on the north shore of Higgins Lake, is home to 449 acres of lakeside recreation in a natural wooded atmosphere. Both provide public boat launches and camping and are extremely popular in the summer months, and in the winter the popular Higgins Lake/Roscommon WinterFest is a two-day celebration of winter!
The village of Roscommon is only about 8 miles from the shores of Higgins Lake, and about 25 miles from Houghton Lake. Locals and visitors alike will find many gift shops and other retail options in the downtown district, as well as enjoy kayaking and tubing along the south branch of the Au Sable River, accessible by one of the areas many liveries. Roscommon is also home to Michigan’s Firemen’s Memorial site/festival, as well as the Au Sable River Center.
Canoeing, kayaking, fishing, golfing, jet skiing, swimming, boating, and enjoying the ORV trails are just some of the summer activities locals and visitors enjoy here. As well as the extensive snowmobile trail network, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and of course ice fishing in the winter months.
